Salzburg, Austria and Munich, Germany

We left Vienna behind us on board a nice, new hispeed train en route to Salzburg.  We crossed the plains of Austria and started approaching the foothills of the Alps.  The train reached a max speed of 200km/h, which we calculated to 120mph - and though it was a smooth ride, you could certainly appreciate the speed.

Salzburg was a very nice contrast to the other cities we visited because it is a much smaller town.  This is the town in which Mozart was born, and the town where scenes from The Sound of Music were filmed.  There were signs everywhere for the Sound of Music.  We had a nice day wandering around, despite some rain.  We were able to see nearly everything in one day.  Highlights were certainly the Baroque churches, including a monastery, and we found this really nice bar on top of a cliff overlooking the town - a perfect spot to huddle out of the rain for a great view and glass of wine.

We also found a nice beer hall called the Augustiner, and had some traditional Austrian beer in massive mugs (though the girl's were a tad smaller).

The rain continued on Thursday, as we boarded a train to head North to Munich, Germany.  We had time for a bit of sightseeing, a traditional German meal on the Marienplatz, and happened to find another beer hall - the Hofbrauhaus, known to me from previous trips to Germany, but the first time when I have been able to have a beer there!

Our half day in Munich gave us a nice taste of the town, and really whet our appetite to go back.
